The ski season begins at the stunning Sierra Nevada

The sweet summertime is over, but that does not mean the adventures have to end! Now the ski season is here, and one of the many advantages of renting or buying a property on the Costa del Sol is that you can be on the pristine slopes of Sierra Nevada in less than two hours!

Everything is possible in Andalucia

It’s winter, it’s getting colder, and there’s snow on the distant hills….. no we’re not talking about the Scottish Highlands, we’re talking about the Sierra Nevada, here in Southern Spain. Located just 1.5 hours from Malaga, this winter wonderland is a haven for ski enthusiasts, day trippers and thrill-seekers alike. If this is your sort of place to go, please read on! If not, read on anyway…you never know!

You might not think of Southern Spain when you think of skiing in the winter, but everything is possible in Andalucia! Sierra Nevada ski resort opened on the 25th of November this year and is expected to close around April 2023. So pack your bags, put your ski glasses on and get ready for skiing in the sun! The Sierra Nevada provides one of the widest and most attractive ski domains in southern Europe. The winter season has 110.4km of skiing distributed in 131 pistes with the largest ski slope in Spain, measuring 1,200m!

Sierra Nevada lies near the city of Granada

The Sierra Nevada ski resort is in Granada, less than one and a half hours from Malaga. If you have never been, Granada is a must if you are going to ski in Sierra Nevada. The city is located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It is known for its medieval architecture, whereof the most famous piece of architecture is the Alhambra which is protected by the Unesco World Heritage. No wonder, since it is the most visited monument in Granada – even in all of Spain.

Sierra Nevada belongs to the third highest mountain range in Europe, which peaks are the highest in the Iberian Peninsula, with more than 20 mountain peaks above 3000 meters altitude. In addition, Sierra Nevada has 105 new state-of-the-art cannons this ski season, so in total there are 315 new units of high energy efficiency and great capacity for snow production in marginal conditions. In other words, what every ski-lover dreams of!

Ski passes & equipment

When the Sierra Nevada ski resort opens, you can rent all equipment there. It is possible to rent skis, snowboards, boots, clothes, safety gear and accessories for both adults and children on-site or in advance online. We definitely recommend that you purchase your ski pass (forfait) in advance via the Sierra Nevada website. This way, you can go directly to the print-it-yourself machine when you arrive so you avoid waiting in line. The price for an adult ski pass for one day starts at 46 euros.
