Suculenta, Port de Soller – Located on the shores of the Mediterranean

Recently, we were invited to review Suculenta, a new restaurant in Port de Soller, Mallorca, promoting a daring, free and luminous cuisine.

Having lived for several years in Port de Soller ourselves, we were more than curious to experience the flavours of this newcomer in this magical little port in the Sierra Tramuntana. Having Javier Bermudo at the helm of the kitchen creates somewhat of an expectation.

Born in Blanes (Girona), he landed in Mallorca through the big door, entering the kitchen of the Hotel Mardavall from where he was recruited for private events. This is how he created his catering company, dedicated to serving a large and exclusive clientele that trusted him for special lunches or dinners. He then set up a private restaurant in Santa Catalina, where he hosted small groups for exclusive events. And that is when he received the proposal to direct the kitchen of Suculenta Port de Sóller. A project that he accepted for its philosophy, its concept, and or being able to start from scratch “and to surprise the clients without a previous experience” to become the magician of Port de Soller at Suculenta.

Arriving at Suculenta we were taken to our table on the outside terrace, a magnificent place, flanked by two beautiful yachts at the time, from where you can glimpse catamarans, fishing boats and the coming and going of life in this port. From here you contemplate nature in its purest form, almost as if you were sailing.

Port de Soller is by far the most beautiful and fairytale like port on the island. Sheltered in a bay from the open sea, it is surrounded by mountains with tucked away stone houses and a charming antique tram that takes you to Soller and further trough the most picturesque route to Palma, the islands capital. Its ‘paseo’ is plastered with restaurants, bars and little boutiques.

As a welcome drink, we were offered an Eastern & Oriental. A cocktail sour with vodka, lime and strawberry. A tasty and refreshing concoction to take in the magnificent scenery of the Soller Port environment. Together with this cocktail we had Carob bread with aioli made of ginger and lemon.

As an aperitif we enjoyed the Hamachi Ceviche with red onion in sherry and mango sauce, which added a perfect balance to the sour of the ceviche followed by Gildas and homemade anchovies and Aove with orange sauce.

Last of the aperitif tasters was a selection of croquettes of the house, lamb – ham and calamari. As they are handmade with fresh ingredients, the selection of ingredients changes every day.

Paired with this selection of aperitifs was a KM 1 2020 (Callet) by Tianna Negre, reminding you of the classic ‘tintos’ but very velvety and with the most amazing orange colour.

For our main dish, we had grilled turbot with fried garlic and chili peppers, that was deboned at our table. The texture of the turbot was amazing, and the addition of fried garlic and chilli peppers made it extremely tasty, especially pairing it with an AVA blanc 2020, (Prensal blanc,Chardonnay, and Muscat) by Ava Vi.

For dessert we had their Tatin, flambéed with amazon rum and buttered ice cream and paired with a delicious Supernova (Moll) by Tomeu Llabrés and coffee.

Apart from the wonderful dishes and the magical scenery, special praise goes to the restaurant manager Miguel Meneses and his team who make your visit at their wonderful venue memorable informing you with their excellent knowledge of their menus and wine selection.

We can only conclude that a lunch at Suculenta embodies La Pura Vida, and Javier Bermudo is indeed nothing less than the magician of fairytale like Port de Soller.
